The Cannonberg Project
Our South African Cannonberg label was originally launched in partnership with the Fairtrade Organisation, which we hoped was going to benefit the local community by contributing to social projects in the Western Cape region. Although it worked well, we now manage the project independently on a more personal level.
The Cannonberg wines are currently made at the Imbuko Farm based in the historic town of Wellington, in the heart of the renowned Cape winelands. We make a Chenin Blanc and a Cabernet Sauvignon; a percentage of the money made from sales of the Cannonberg wines goes directly to projects within the local community. Philippe & Edward meet with the growers and representatives from the local community throughout the year to discuss how best to use the ongoing funds
In 2011 the donations have been used to improve the facilities at the Uitkyk Creche. The Creche takes care of pre-school children and assists them with their homework in the afternoons whilst their parents are at work on the farms.
The parents can focus on their work and put their minds at rest, knowing their children are close by, in a safe, caring environment, whilst their academic needs are tended to by trained staff.
With so many energetic, eager youngsters, there is certainly never a dull moment! “The school motto is ‘dare to make a difference’!” says Rosaline, headteacher.
With this type of positive attitude it’s no wonder this vibrant and groundbreaking farm school has become such a success story. Not only is it a shining example of overcoming obstacles, the Uitkyk Pre-Primary and Educare acts as an exceptional role model to inspire other South African farms to make a real effort in changing people's lives.
