Bandol Rouge Château de Pibarnon 2004 (R)Our price: From £30.37Pibarnon's greatness owes much to the passion of Comte de Saint Victor who bought the property when he fell in love with its wine on holiday and subsequently restored both the 13th century basted (a Provençal country house) and the vineyards, which were in disarray. The hill upon which the vineyard plots are located is something of a geographical oddity, in that they contain Triassic limestone, which is completely different to the granite and other soils of the region. This, together with the altitude of Pibarnon's vineyards (at 300m) explains the elegance and aromatic finesse of the wines. The Mourvèdre vines are protected from the fierce Mistral by the semi-circular amphitheatre of terraces.

Brouilly 'La Croix des Rameaux', Domaine Lapalu, 2009Our price: From £22.95With Jean-Claude Lapalu's wine you can detect the strength behind the fruit. Grapes are hand picked and sorted, loaded by conveyor to avoid damage and given neither SO2 nor cultured yeasts during fermentation. During 8-10 days maceration, a wooden grill is used to enhance extraction. The wine stays for at least 6 months on its fine lees gaining power and complexity. And yet the Brouillys are neither heavy nor clumsy and one could easily imagine them ageing 10-15 years. The Vieilles Vignes Brouilly is the combination of two cuvées, one made using carbonic maceration and the other a traditional vinification with destemmed grapes. The two cuvees are then blended after their malolactic fermentation and spend the winter in stainless steel tanks.

The grapes are vinified under the direction of experienced winemaker Bernie Stanlake and Melanie Bowater who craft these signature wines to make Fonty's Pool one of Western Australia's most distinctive wineries. The name 'Fonty's Pool' comes from an early settler to the region. In 1907 Archie Fontanini began farming on the property where the 110 hectares of vines are now laid. He built an irrigation dam which was known as Fonty's Pool, as it became a popular place for locals and tourists to swim. A growing concern for creating genuine wines that respect the land, nature, and the subtle balance which allows for the expression of harmony between soil and vine, caused the family to turn to organic farming in 1990. The cellar, located in the village of Puissalicon itself, is an old building which has been renovated and enlarged over the generations. At the time when Languedoc was known for its 'eau de vie', it was even home to a family distillery which no longer exists.

Cheval des Andes, 2006Our price: From £57.15This joint venture between Cheval Blanc and Terrazas de los Andes originated as Director Pierre Lurton sought out a special international terroir in which to apply the storied blending heritage of the French château. Lurton was intrigued by the notion of unearthing a connection with the Saint Émilion past: Malbec, decimated by phylloxera in the 1860s and wiped out as one of the most important varieties in Saint Émilion and Pomerol, has since been reincarnated in ungrafted form in Argentina and now produces some of the world's best. This wine, made using Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and a small percentage of Petit Verdot, spends 18 months in French oak.
Chinon, Domaine Herault 2009Our price: From £9.90Based in Panzoult, in the heart of the appellation, this family estate spans 24 hectares and solely cultivates Cabernet Franc, also known locally as Breton. The estate is split between two terroirs, gravel in the valley, and limestone/clay on the hillside. Thanks to a full southern exposure, the grapes benefit from great ripening potential. This is translated into a typical but ripe, round and juicy Chinon with lovely raspberry notes. Furthermore, the wines benefit from maturing in the large underground cellars that were dug up during the thirteenth century. The local stone is called "Tuffeau" (a kind of limestone) and was used to build the fabulous Chateaux all along the Loire Valley during the Renaissance, including Chenonceau where Mary Queen of Scots grew up.

He also knows a thing or two about barrels, as his father was a cooper. Grenache Syrah, Saint Cirice, 2010Our price: From £7.42Château Saint-Cyrgues is located on the southern side of the Costières de Nîmes, which were formed in prehistoric times by alluvial deposits from the Durance and Rhône rivers. The ground is composed of moulded flint shingles and stones. The estate, 40 or so hectares, is in between le Puech de Dardaillon and the historic site of Espeyran. Espeyran was an important Hellenic trading post situated strategically on one of the arms of the Rhône. The site appears to have seen the passage of numerous commercial commodities. Archeological digs reveal the presence of many ceramics including different varieties of amphora coming from various regions of the Mediterranean. Amphorae were used to transport wine, amongst other things. One can therefore presume that wine has been flowing for many years around the Domaine Saint-Cyrgues.

We went through all the best grape producing estates, finally deciding for the exceptional quality of that in the First Zone (Maipú, Cruz de Piedra, Ugarteche, Agrelo) as well as from Valle de Uco. Along with a hard selection of the best producers, we meticulously supervise each step and work in the vineyard from start to finish of each growing season, observing well each little detail. Marcillac Vieilles Vignes Domaine du Cros 2008Our price: From £13.05The wines are made exclusively from the Mansois grape, otherwise known as 'Fer' or 'Fer Savadou' in Gaillac. In 1892, Domaine de Cros was a tiny estate of only one hectare producing a mere 4,000 bottles a year. They then implemented a program of buying and renting older vineyards and planting on the best hillsides, some of which have a gradient of 1:3. The surface area of the vineyard now covers 25 hectares, most of which are used for AOC production. The Teuliers then constructed a wine storehouse enabling them to rack by gravity and added on an air-conditioned bottle storage room.

His philosophy is to accompany nature rather than force it.His wines are now amongst the most sought after in the Côtes de Nuits following the huge amount of praise he has received on the international wine scene.
Mas Amiel Vintage Rouge 2009Our price: From £21.60Maury is surrounded by the Rivesaltes appellation. The mountains to the north denote the end of Corbières and of the Aube département.Maury is therefore in the Pyrenee-Orientales and thus Catalan in nature. But the Maury appellation is steeped in Cathar history, with the Peyrepretuse and Queribus Cathar stronghold not very far away. The vintage red Maury is made in the same style as the rimage wines of Banyuls. From 100% Grenache Noir, the vines are cultivated on south-facing broken schist and clay soils that yield only 25hl/ha. Alcohol is added while the wine is still in the vat (a process known in French as 'mutage sur les grains'), slowing down the final fermentation and thus allowing a longer period of maceration which gives the wine greater richness.
Maury Mas Mudigliza 2009Our price: From £19.80After spending some time as a winemaker in a Grand Cru estate in Bordeaux, Dimitri Glipa decided to settle in the heart of Roussillon, particularly in the sought after terroir of the Fenouillèdes. Like many talented producers in the area Dimitri produces wines from old vines that are situated at high altitude.

Pinot Noir Hautes Côtes de Beaune Domaine Henri Delagrange 2010Our price: From £13.05Didier Delagrange produces fabulous wines which are very well balanced and express their true identity. This high level of quality is achieved by meticulous work in the vineyard, involving methods such as 'vendange en vert' (green harvest) which consists of removing the upper lobe of each bunch when the fruit has set. Not only does this reduce the yields and increase concentration, but it also helps with the health of the fruit. With a more open bunch the fruit is less likely to rot, and the grapes' exposure to the sun is increased. Didier is constantly looking for purity in both his white and red wines.
