Savoie is an alpine region home to a rich tapestry of local grape varieties such as Altesse (also known as Roussette), Jacquère, Mondeuse, and Chasselas. Savoie produces much more white wine than red or rosé, and typically its wines are light, refreshing and crisp.

Domaine Bruno Lupin Cru 'Frangy' 2010Our price: From £11.92The Roussette de Savoie AOC is for dry white wines made mainly from the Altesse variety (known locally as Roussette), with small amounts of Chardonnay and Mondeuse Blanche. One of the best crus in this AOC is Frangy. The soils here are argillaceous limestone and glacial moraines, with the vines facing south. As with many of the vineyards in this region, the viticulture philosophy followed is 'lutte raisonnée'.It means the 'reasoned struggle' and is an approach to vine growing that claims to use fewer chemicals than standard vine growers. In theory, it is very similar to organic vine growing, the main difference is that unlike Organic vine growing, Lutte Raisonné does not have any system checks or measurable limits as to what is or isn't permitted. The only measurement is the conscience of the grower. In essence, it is more of a rationale than a discipline.
