Cabernet Sauvignon Domaine Bassac 'Lo Bartas' Organic 2009Our price: £8.95Puissalicon is a small village in the south of France with the typical architecture, in circular fashion, of medieval towns in this region. It is equidistant from Béziers, Pézenas and Bédarieux. The Domaine Bassac vineyard covers around 80 hectares. A growing concern for creating genuine wines that respect the land, nature, and the subtle balance which allows for the expression of harmony between soil and vine, caused the family to turn to organic farming in 1990. The cellar, located in the village of Puissalicon itself, is an old building which has been renovated and enlarged over the generations. At the time when Languedoc was known for its 'eau de vie', it was even home to a family distillery which no longer exists.

Faugeres Tradition, Clos Fantine, Biodynamic/Natural, 2010Our price: £14.75Sale price: £12.55Despite not holding an official certificate to indicate that their estate is organic or biodynamic, the Andrieu family conduct all operations at Clos Fantine with the utmost respect for nature. Run nowadays by two sisters and a brother, the estate, which is situated in Faugères, looks wild and relatively untamed, but this approach fits the family ethos, that vines should be allowed to “grow like any other local plant, in a state that verges on the wild.” This approach gives their wines a most pure, natural flavour; their rough, meaty reds bringing you closer to nature with every drop you drink.
Foliage Extra Brut Hervé Jestin NVOur price: £33.10Château d’Avize has recently been purchased by Abrau Durso, the Russian sparkling producer and they have hired Hervé Jestin as their chief winemaker. Hervé Jestin is one of the most iconic winemakers in Champagne as he is one of the first to have introduced biodynamic principles to the Champagne region as he believes in producing wines that are harmonious and as natural as possible. Foliage is dominated by Chardonnay (60%) that comes from the Côte des Blancs and has partially spent time in oak. It has spent 36 months maturing “Sur Lattes” and being Extra Brut (less than 6g residual sugar) its richness is balanced by very good acidity.

Pouilly Fumé Jonathan et Didier Pabiot 2011Our price: £14.40Jonathan was one the very first producers we started to work with and he was certainly the youngest. His certified organic estate has grown to 27 ha and he is now being recognised by his peers as one of the best young producers of the appellation. His Pouilly Fumé is getting better by the vintage but his parcellar selections are attracting a lot of interest. Aubaine is made from a single parcel on very stony soils and Predilection is made from old vines on a very steep slope of poor Kidmerigian soil which produces very low yields. Both cuvees rest on their lees for 12 months in an underground concrete tank, at a constant temperature. These wines definitely need decanting. The Pouilly sur Loire is a new project for Jonathan and is made with the original and ancient Chasselas grape variety which is knowing a bit of revival. Eurythmie is made with the Predilection cuvee which has matured for 10 months in oak barrels.

Rosé de Léoube, Côtes de Provence, 2010Our price: £13.15Provence claims to have the oldest of France’s vineyards. From the 2nd Century BC, the Romans expanded winegrowing in the area, introduced four centuries earlier by the Phoenicians. Then, in the Middle Ages, the monastic orders and noble families came to head up numerous Provencal estates, an era when vineyards were to increase considerably in size and stature. It was probably in the 14th Century when the magnificent Château Léoube was built near the village of Bormes-les- Mimosas, in the Var region.
Saumur Champigny "Terres Chaudes" Biodynamic 2010 Thierry GermainOur price: £18.45Serious wines are produced at this estate run by the charismatic Thierry Germain. His approach is closer to a Burgundy wine-maker than a typical Loire producer. This 50-acre domaine, situated in a superb viticultural location in the appellation of Saumur Champigny, has been a winery since 1850. Germain, from a long line of Bordeaux winemakers, arrived here in 1991, attracted by the region’s perfect balance of grape varietal, climate and terroir, which he considers one of the finest in France. The vineyard is worked in a natural way with the goal of keeping the vine and the soil at its healthiest (lutte raisonée). The harvest is manual, selecting grapes at their very ripest level. Vinification is handled in small batches with bottling unfined and unfiltered. Germain has garnered praise in the European press for his exciting wines, which are always filled with ripe, generous fruit and supple textures.
St Véran “Les Mandeliers” Domaine Arnaud Combier, 2010,Our price: £16.25Sale price: £13.85The winery is situated in the village of Pierreclos whilst the vines for the Saint Véran are planted in the commune of Prissé. Arnaud Combier studied viticulture and winemaking for four years at Beaune, then worked in different vineyards, such as Domaine Valette at Chaintré, and Domaine Colbois at Chablis, before taking over the vines from his grandparents in 1999, at which point the vineyard was associated to the cooperative. Arnaud withdrew from the cooperative in 2003, so that he could produce his wines under his own name. The estate is in its 2nd year of conversion to organic farming (Ecocert label). Everything is done by hand and no chemicals are used in the vineyard. Vinification is with wild yeasts and there is a natural malolactic in tank. With just a light filtration, no fining and a very small sulphur addition this is naked, terroir-driven Chardonnay.
