Cloudy Bay, Sauvignon Blanc, 2012Our price: £21.95The Wairau Valley, located towards the north of New Zealand’s South Island, is home to one of the Marlborough region’s best producers, Cloudy Bay. The valley experiences a cool maritime climate, perfect for grape growing, while also basking in more sunlight than any other district in the whole country. Founded in 1986, having previously been fallow land used for rearing sheep, the estate was ravaged by phylloxera while still in its infancy. However, in 1992 the vineyard was replanted and since then the label has gone from strength to strength. The entire estate is more or less exclusively used to grow Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, grapes which thrive in such cool, settled conditions and enjoy the land’s stony soil. Of the many wonderful whites produced, Cloudy Bay Te Koko stands out as a particularly good example of Marlborough produce. An alternative style of Sauvignon, the Te Koko displays complexity and is both deliciously aromatic and richly textured, conjuring aromas of lychee, honeysuckle and thyme.

De Martino Sauvignon Blanc, 2011 OrganicOur price: £12.40Isla de Maipo, a small town around 50 kilometres from the Chilean capital of Santiago, houses the De Martino winery, one of our exciting new producers. Originally established in 1934 by Pietro De Martino Pascualone, who had left his native Italy to found a vineyard in the new world, the estate is located in a prime viticultural position, on the banks of the now arid Maipo River. The fact the valley previously accommodated the ferocious torrents of the Maipo gives soil conditions which are unique in the region, alluvial earth with high silt levels - great for the cultivation of vines.
Domaine Bassac Organic Sauvignon Blanc 2012Our price: £9.80An organic family run estate based in the small medieval settlement of Puisalicon. The 60 hectare estate provides varied soils as well as grape varieties, their whites made from Sauvignon, Muscat and Chardonnay, while their reds are created using Carignan, Grenache and Cinsault among others. They cultivate all their vineyards in a completely organic manner, using compost and organic fertilisers to treat their soil and completing all weeding and ploughing by hand. They also only use natural products to treat their vines and other crops.

They are sheltered but have taken advantage of their northwest orientation which ensures excellent ripening conditions. Jason is the viticulturist and Eveline is the winemaker, who used to be the senior winemaker at Cloudy Bay. The wines literally are little beauties. Under the careful management of Eveline, the wine making process delivers true Marlborough wines, however, they are exquisitely elegant and feminine, the flavours are expressive but refined and they will either be enjoyed on their own, or they will be capable of matching very sophisticated food.

The success of the wines in international competitions and accolades earned can be attributed to the combined efforts of the growers, its viticulturalist and the winemaking team. The wines continue to be made using carefully nurtured grapes from boutique vineyards overseen by viticulturalist Malcom Adams, and from its own vineyards overseen by Viticulturalist of the Year 2006, Marcus Wickham, both very knowledgeable in their field. Furthermore, Mud House Wine Company benefits from the expertise of Matt Thompson as consultant winemaker. Matt has a proven reputation, with over 17 vintages in New Zealand.

The Caves d’Alignan is a Co-operative in the Languedoc region that has a very good reputation for producing quality wines utilising modern techniques. In the past few years, Alignan has augmented its modern winery with the addition of further, up to date equipment that ensures that all their wines are of a consistently high quality. Situated in the Côtes de Thongue area, the vineyards benefit from the Mediterranean climate, giving their grapes good ripeness, yet also are exposed to a northern prevailing wind ensuring good levels of acidity; an important factor to give wines a balanced feel.

Now run by Francois Leclair, the latest of three generations of fathers and sons to control proceedings, the estate is part of the "Appellation d'Origine Controlee Touraine", indicating that all vines have passed quality control checks that render the wines they produce of a sufficient level to be bottled as "high quality".
