Carmel Ridge, White, 2009Our price: From £11.92Carmel Winery was founded in 1882 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild, owner of Château Lâfite. The main winery is situated at Zichron Ya'acov, on the slopes of Mt.Carmel overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Carmel remains the largest winery in Israel, with vineyards all over the country, but is particularly well represented in the cooler climate, higher altitude Upper Galilee. The winemaker is Lior Lacser, who studied in Beaune and worked in Burgundy and Bordeaux before joining Carmel. Carmel wines are Kosher, and suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

It is equidistant from Béziers, Pézenas and Bédarieux. The Domaine Bassac vineyard covers around 80 hectares. A growing concern for creating genuine wines that respect the land, nature, and the subtle balance which allows for the expression of harmony between soil and vine, caused the family to turn to organic farming in 1990. The cellar, located in the village of Puissalicon itself, is an old building which has been renovated and enlarged over the generations. At the time when Languedoc was known for its 'eau de vie', it was even home to a family distillery which no longer exists.

Sauvignon Blanc, Little Beauty, 2009Our price: From £12.15Little Beauty is a bespoke and independent range of Limited Edition wines from the elemental and unique Waihopai Valley in Marlborough, New Zealand. Distinct flavours are derived from the stony, alluvial river terraces on which the vines are planted. State of the art climatic monitoring equipment has been installed throughout the vineyard proving the site benefits from longer autumns, increased growing degree days and higher diurnal temperatures than other parts of the Marlborough region. 2008 is the first vintage and despite limited volumes, the Little Beauty portfolio unusually includes hand crafted Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Dry Riesling, and of course, Sauvignon Blanc - all expressive examples of what the site offers. The grapes are vinified under the direction of experienced winemaker Bernie Stanlake and Melanie Bowater who craft these signature wines to make Fonty's Pool one of Western Australia's most distinctive wineries.The name 'Fonty's Pool' comes from an early settler to the region. In 1907 Archie Fontanini began farming on the property where the 110 hectares of vines are now laid. He built an irrigation dam which was known as Fonty's Pool, as it became a popular place for locals and tourists to swim. Fonty's Pool is located just outside the Pemberton township, set against an idyllic landscape of lush karri forests.

Now run by Francois Leclair, the latest of three generations of fathers and sons to control proceedings, the estate is part of the "Appellation d'Origine Controlee Touraine", indicating that all vines have passed quality control checks that render the wines they produce of a sufficient level to be bottled as "high quality".
