Cabernet Merlot, Fonty's Pool, 2008Our price: From £11.25Established in 1989, Fonty's Pool is a contemporary Pemberton winery producing consistently exceptional wines at an affordable price. Premium sites within the original vineyard have been selected to create wines which emphasise their regional characteristics. The grapes are vinified under the direction of experienced winemaker Bernie Stanlake and Melanie Bowater who craft these signature wines to make Fonty's Pool one of Western Australia's most distinctive wineries. The name 'Fonty's Pool' comes from an early settler to the region. In 1907 Archie Fontanini began farming on the property where the 110 hectares of vines are now laid. He built an irrigation dam which was known as Fonty's Pool, as it became a popular place for locals and tourists to swim. Fonty's Pool is located just outside the Pemberton township, set against an idyllic landscape of lush karri forests.

Merlot Domaine Bassac Organic 2010Our price: From £8.10Puissalicon is a small village in the south of France with the typical architecture, in circular fashion, of medieval towns in this region. It is equidistant from Béziers, Pézenas and Bédarieux. The Domaine Bassac vineyard covers around 80 hectares. A growing concern for creating genuine wines that respect the land, nature, and the subtle balance which allows for the expression of harmony between soil and vine, caused the family to turn to organic farming in 1990. The cellar, located in the village of Puissalicon itself, is an old building which has been renovated and enlarged over the generations. At the time when Languedoc was known for its 'eau de vie', it was even home to a family distillery which no longer exists.

Merlot, Newton Vineyards Unfiltered, 2006Our price: From £31.95Su Hua married Peter Newton in 1972 and moved to America the same year, in California she worked alongside her husband at Sterling Vineyard. Together they helped put Napa Valley on the map as on of the world's greatest wine regions. In 19878, after the sale of Sterling Vineyard, Su Hua began to dream of a winery that could wholly encapsulate her own personal philosophy of winemaking. This took shape in the form of sustainable farming techniques and careful attention to detail, preservation of the natural habitat and restriction of the use of synthetic pesticides, chemicals and fertilisers. Newton bottle most of their wines unfiltered and unfined, to avoid stripping the wine of its unique aroma and flavour. During growing season, Su Hua can be found ascending the unforgiving slopes of Spring Mountain, examining the vines. She is also to be found there every day during harvest, analysing and tasting the grapes. She believes that wonderful wines are the product of wonderful vineyards, that is to say, the product of their terroir.
