De Martino Legado Syrah, 2010, OrganicOur price: £12.40Isla de Maipo, a small town around 50 kilometres from the Chilean capital of Santiago, houses the De Martino winery, one of our exciting new producers. Originally established in 1934 by Pietro De Martino Pascualone, who had left his native Italy to found a vineyard in the new world, the estate is located in a prime viticultural position, on the banks of the now arid Maipo River. The fact the valley previously accommodated the ferocious torrents of the Maipo gives soil conditions which are unique in the region, alluvial earth with high silt levels - great for the cultivation of vines.
Gigondas, Domaine Grand Romane, Domaine Pierre Amadieu 2009Our price: £21.60Located in the appellation of Gigondas towards the south of the Rhône valley, Pierre Amadieu’s vineyard is one of true quality. Having originally purchased the estate back in 1929, when incidentally it only comprised 7 hectares, Pierre expanded, planting new vineyards and broadening his range of grape varieties. He still oversees proceedings, although the day to day operations of the Domaine are now controlled by his son Claude and grandson, Pierre Jr. Grapes including Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah are grown to create their peppery Grande Romane, a deep, cherry coloured red featuring sophisticated notes of liquorice, light toast and Provencal herbs.
Le Chêne Bleu Abelard 2006Our price: £63.25Named in homage of a quite stunning ancient blue oak tree that overlooks the vineyards, La Chene Bleu is owned and run by husband and wife pairing Nicole and Xavier Rolet. From their base in Dentelles de Montmirail, they produce wines in an organic, sustainable and biodynamic manner, in accordance with their philosophy, that the soil and terroirs command utmost respect. All of their wines are bespoke and handmade. The Rolet’s believe that this method, despite being extremely time-consuming and expensive, ensure that produce reaches its optimum quality and can be enjoyed to their fullest. Their motto, “not yours, not mine, but ours” emphasises the importance of sharing in their philosophy, and the fact that they strive to ensure that each of their wines are as good as they possibly can be so they can take pleasure in sharing it with others.

Ned and Henry Shiraz, Hewitson, 2010Our price: £20.30Founded by winemaker Dean Hewitson in 1998, the Hewitson estate is a new addition to our list for 2012. Having travelled extensively, working in the world of wine, Dean came to realise that the best wines in South Australia would have to be produced from the region’s oldest vineyards, many of which have been barren and fallow since the 19th century. Aided by his wife Lou, who the estates LuLu Sauvignon Blanc is named after, Dean began to cultivate these lands again, and recent vintages have shown that his hunch was in fact a masterstroke.

David took over his family winery after a period of time working in the Hunter Valley as well as a stint honing his skills in Bordeaux, and since then, he has grown his estate so that it is now recognised among the best in the country. The winery is now a certified organic facility, producing wines of the highest quality created with indigenous grapes such as Zinfandel, one of the estate’s four flagship varieties.
