Trailblazer in Alsace – terroir-driven – minimal intervention techniques
Located in the town of Hunawihr, around 30 kilometres from the French-German border, the domaine was established by François Schwach in 1950. Originally Francois had worked in wine sales but he was determined to establish his own project, producing wines that accurately portrayed the unique terroir of Alsace.
The estate is now in the hands of the third generation of the family, namely Sébastien, François’ grandson. During his time short time at the helm, Sébastien has made a big impact on the estate, gradually introducing the use of minimal intervention techniques and increasing the use of organic methods used in the vineyard. In fact, the 2020 harvest that will take place this autumn will be the first Schwach vintage to be certified organic – a testament to the major impact that Sébastien has made during his short time in charge.
Ultimately, we believe the wines of the Schwach family highlight the wide array of diversity available in this incredible region, while all maintaining a similar style – bright acidity, rich fruit flavours and extremely food-friendly.
The Schwach family have been regarded as specialists in the production of Crémant d’Alsace for over 30 years and it is easy to see why when you taste their flagship ‘Extra Brut’. Produced with 90% Pinot (Blanc, Auxerrois and a hint of Pinot Gris) and 10 % Chardonnay, and using the Traditional Method most famously utilised in Champagne, the wine is aged for a minimum of 18 months before bottling. The resulting wine is creamy yet fresh, highlighting fresh fruit flavours alongside buttery notes. Perfect as a wine for celebrating, to have as an aperitif or to match with oysters or seafood.
