Luis Seabra

In 2012, Luis Seabra quit his prestigious role as head winemaker at Niepoort to strike out on his own. After many years working under some of the more renowned winemakers in the world, he felt the time was right to put his energy into a first solo project.

From his high-altitude vineyards in the Douro, he produces both whites and reds that are based on blends of native grape varieties from ancient, co-planted vineyards on a combination of soil types.

Luis’ philosophy is encapsulated by the name ‘Cru’ under which he bottles his wines. Meaning raw, his aim is to produce wines that offer a sense of place in a true, honest manner. He only adds a tiny dose of sulphur, ensuring the wines are a true representation of their unique terroirs.


We were all blown away when we first tasted Luis’ wines and we are thrilled to have been able to secure a small allocation for the Scottish market.

‘Xisto Cru’ Tinto 2017

Rather than single vineyard, this is a single soil field blend, from 2 plots planted in the Cima Corgo subregion of the Douro from 1920-1933. It is intended as a clear expression of terroir and place. Sustainably farmed vines, and vinified using only spontaneous fermentation and indigenous yeasts. This way, Luis removes all potential variability other than the soil type as an expression of terroir.
