La Combe des Grand'Vignes
Denis and Didier Berthollier are the 5th generation of winemakers in their family, having taken control of the estate 1996. The land has been farmed by their ancestors since 1850 and, like many vineyards in the region, was originally based around polyculture rather than simply grape-growing.
This changed in the 1960s, when their parents decided to concentrate on planting vineyards and winemaking. At that stage, they were at the vanguard of production in the region, working alongside a small group of local growers to establish the official Appellation of Savoie in 1970.
When they took over in the mid-90s, the brothers made a conscious decision to decrease their yields and focus all their attentions on the quality rather than quantity of fruit they were producing. In their own words, they also began “working with nature, rather than trying to dominate it”, a major shift in philosophy but one which has enable them to improve the quality of their wines years on year.
Chignin Bergeron 'La Coulée de Prospérine' 2019
100% Bergeron aka Roussanne. Expect notes of dried apricot, honey, white peach and tropical fruit on the nose, underpinned by spice and smoke. The palate is rich, dominated by citrus and candied fruits, building to a long finish laced with fresh acidity and spicy minerality. A beautifully complex wine that is extremely versatile.
