Beaujolais new wave

David Large

We often talk about producers being a one-man-band and this is most certainly an appropriate description when it comes to our latest Beaujolais discover, David Large. Not only does he conduct all vineyard work himself, he is also a rap and poetry aficionado, putting his talents to good use when it comes to penning the lyrics that adorn his back labels. He describes his development as a winemaker as a process of “unlearning” – breaking down the techniques collected through his studies as well various periods working under highly-esteemed to establish his own unique style.

His vineyards are located in pockets around Montmelas, a beautiful and mountainous area of the Southwest Beaujolais. The soil types of David’s wines are predominantly granite, clay and the “Pierres Dorées”, a local and unique limestone formation pigmented with iron oxide. His wines also benefit from a volcanic rock base uniquely suited to Gamay vines. His fixation on terroir specificity means that he vinifies and bottles almost every plot separately, resulting in as many as 18 different cuvées each year. With that many wines from only 5ha of vineyards, you can imagine there’s very little to go around, so we are delighted to have been able to secure some for the Scottish market.

Lovely Flavoursome Beaujolais

Quite full flavoured as far as Beaujolais' go. Lovely little bit of spritz. Delicious.

Great, interesting expression of Gamay

Tasted as part of Vins De Soif tasting, Jan 2021. A really fab wine, with a lovely acetic kick that tingles the palate on first sip, before releasing into a lovely expression of red fruits and juice. Very easily drinkable, intrigued to try more from David Large.
