Legendary winemaker – indigenous grape variety – trailblazer
Rafael Palacios is the brother of Spain’s leading winemaker Alvaro Palacios, who built his reputation in the vineyards of the Rioja and Bierzo. Rafael, on the other hand, has set himself up in the north western region of Valdeoras, where he is single-handedly improving the reputation of the local varietal, Godello.
He began his Valdeorras project in 2004, purchasing old Godello vineyards from old local growers, having previously worked in the region as a consultant. The very rigid topography and low fertility of the soil had led to the almost complete abandonment of the terraced vineyards in this tiny but historically important district, but Rafael spotted the potential that this terroir had to offer.
The results have been spectacular, with his Godello now achieving recognition similar to that latterly afforded to Albariño and Verdejo – other indigenous Spanish grapes that have experienced a renaissance in recent years.
