We are delighted to have just taken shipment of our extremely limited allocation of newly released wines from cult Californian producer, Ridge Vineyards.
Under the watchful eye of renowned winemaker Paul Draper, Ridge have gained worldwide acclaim for their stunning range of Bordeaux-blends from the high altitude vines of Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Additionally, Paul also produces some of the best Zinfandel in California from his Lytton Springs and Geyserville vineyards in Sonoma County.
Paul was installed as head winemaker 1969 after four Stanford Research engineers purchased the abandoned vineyard on the precipice of the Monte Bello Ridge with the ambition of creating terroir-driven Californian wines.
Paul’s minimal intervention approach across the vineyard and winery has led to Ridge being upheld as one of the standard bearers for Californian wine.
Key to his mantra is the borrowing of traditional, old world techniques combined with hands-off methods where possible. The outcome is wines that are fined but left unfiltered before being aged in new American oak barrels, resulting in silky smooth reds with fine tannins and beautifully balanced fruit.
‘Monte Bello’ is the signature wine of the estate, produced with fruit from a vineyard located at 2600ft above sea level. The high-altitude nature of the site ensures the grapes endure a slow ripening process, resulting in wonderfully balanced, refined and elegant fruit.
Originally ‘Monte Bello’ consisted of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. These days, it remains Cabernet Sauvignon dominant but backed up with varying quantities, depending on the vintage, of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc to add complexity to the final wine.
The Zinfandel-based wines of Lytton Springs and Geyserville were added to the range in 1972 and offer proof that Californian Zinfandel can be simultaneously balanced, complex with well integrated tannins and extremely long, smooth finishes.
