Minimal intervention – indigenous varieties
After many years working for some of the most prestigious estates in Maremma, in 2006 Antonio Camillo took the chance to branch out by himself starting with five hectares of vineyards purchased in his native southern Tuscany, near the small town of Manciano. He cultivates his vines using traditional methods with minimal intervention. Only organic products such as copper and sulphur are used and he specialises in the cultivation of the little known indigenous red variety of Ciliegiolo, which is genetically related to the better known Sangiovese. Ciliegiolo – which literally translates as cherry – was often used in Tuscany as a blending component to add aromatic notes to wines. Antonio is a firm believer of the quality of this variety in its own right, being strongly of the opinion that it offers the best representation of his Maremma Alta terroirs.
