Viva l'Italia
Welcome to this month’s edition of the l’Art du Vin wine club.
This time, we turn our focus to Italy, a country whose wines are shaped by centuries of tradition, regional identity, and an extraordinary diversity of native grape varieties. This month we are focusing on two grapes that perfectly capture Italy’s character: Catarratto and Montepulciano.
From the sun-drenched vineyards of Sicily, Catarratto is one of the historic white grapes grown throughout the island, here presented in both a naturally styled, minimal-intervention form and a clean, organic expression. In contrast, Montepulciano brings us to central Italy, where rolling hills and Adriatic influences produce deeply coloured, generous reds with both structure and approachability.
Across these four wines, we explore how tradition and modern winemaking coexist — from unfiltered, low-intervention techniques to polished, classic styles. Together, they offer a snapshot of Italy’s ability to honour its past while continuing to evolve.
I hope you enjoy discovering these wines as much as I do, and thank you, as always, for your continued support of the wine club.
Best wishes
Philippe
Unfiltered / Unfined Catarratto, Ciello, Sicily 2024
Producer
Ciello is based in western Sicily, around Palermo, where vineyards benefit from warm Mediterranean sunshine and cooling coastal breezes. The project works with organically farmed fruit and minimal intervention techniques, often bottling without fining or filtration to preserve the wine’s natural character. Catarratto, one of Sicily’s oldest native grapes, thrives in these sun-drenched hillside vineyards.
Tasting Notes
A lively and slightly hazy white with notes of lemon peel, orchard fruit, and wild herbs. The palate is textured and fresh, with a gentle grip and a rustic edge that adds both interest and depth.
Food Pairing
Perfect with Mediterranean dishes such as grilled vegetables, seafood, or simple pasta with olive oil and herbs.
Biologico Catarratto, Da Vero, Sicily 2024
Producer
Da Vero sources its organic Catarratto from vineyards across Sicily, where the hot climate and cooling sea influences help retain freshness in the grapes. The focus is on producing clean, expressive wines that highlight the natural vibrancy of southern Italy while remaining approachable and versatile.
Tasting Notes
Bright and refreshing, with aromas of citrus, green apple, and a touch of white blossom. The palate is crisp and clean, with lively acidity and a smooth, easy-drinking finish.
Food Pairing
An excellent aperitif or paired with light dishes such as salads, grilled fish, or fresh cheeses.
Montepulciano ERA, Cantine Volpi, Piedmont 2022
Producer
Cantine Volpi is based in Piedmont in northern Italy, but for this wine they source Montepulciano grapes from central Italy, primarily Abruzzo, where the variety reaches its full potential. The vineyards benefit from a balance of warm days and cooler nights influenced by the nearby Adriatic Sea, allowing the grapes to develop both ripeness and structure. Their organic approach ensures a focus on purity and environmental responsibility.
Tasting Notes
A medium-bodied red with flavours of ripe cherry, blackberry, and a hint of spice. Soft tannins and balanced acidity give the wine an approachable structure, making it both versatile and satisfying.
Food Pairing
Ideal with classic Italian dishes such as tomato-based pasta, pizza, or roasted meats.
Podere Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Umani Ronchi, Abruzzo 2024
Producer
Umani Ronchi is a leading producer in Abruzzo, along Italy’s Adriatic coast, where vineyards are situated between the mountains and the sea. This unique geography creates excellent conditions for Montepulciano, combining warm sunlight with cooling breezes that preserve balance and freshness. The Podere range reflects a modern, polished expression of this classic regional grape.
Tasting Notes
Rich and smooth, with notes of black cherry, plum, and subtle hints of spice and cocoa. The palate is rounded with supple tannins and a long, warming finish.
Food Pairing
A perfect match for hearty dishes such as lasagne, grilled meats, or slow-cooked stews.
