Rioja Reserva, Conde Valdemar, Rioja Spain 2012
Regular price £17.75
Since the 1980’s Conde Valdemar has been recognised among the key reference points in the Rioja region, regarded for the sheer consistency in quality of their Reserva and Gran Reserva wines.
The history of the estate dates back to its inception in 1889. It is now the fifth generation of the Martinez Bujanda family who are custodians of the vineyards, maintaining their close connection with the vineyards in an attempt to disprove the common theory that many Riojas are made in the winery rather than the vineyard.
The family have always been at the forefront of innovation in the region, none more so that when they introduced a single-vineyard, barrel-fermented white to the market in 1987. Critics were blown away and, in time, many other wineries adopted this technique for the production of their flagship white wines.
Their Gran Reserva is often seen as the jewel in the crown of their range, consistently providing excellent value for money at the top end of the Rioja spectrum. Bursting with brambly fruit, liquorice, spice and well-integrated oak, it is easy to see why it has become a flagship wine for the region.
