Forward-thinking – marriage between tradition and modernity

Bodegas Altanza

Bodegas Altanza sprung to life in 1998 when a group of like-minded local businessmen decided the Rioja wine market needed a shot in the arm. The estate has gone from strength to strength, concentrating on a search for the perfect balance between traditional values and modern techniques, a philosophy echoed in the architecture of their winery – a stunning example of contemporary design using local raw materials.

Head winemaker Carlos Ferreiro now produces a range of wines that cater for all tastes and budgets. Recently, he has converted to exclusive use of French oak barrels in the ageing process, a move which has most certainly enhanced the quality of his wines.

Refreshing and full of tropical characters with lovely grassy notes, full tropical characters with lovely grassy notes.

Lovely Little Number

When I asked the wine experts at L'Art du Vin for something different, they asked in turn what do you like? My response was Pinot Grigio and Viognier, try this they said. 2 years later and this is still a firm favourite, not a wine connoisseur so I wouldn't like to describe the fruits etc, however if your palate prefers the two varieties mentioned previously, this is well worth a try.

Pinot Grigio Lover does Rioja

So I asked our friends at L'Art du Vin for recommendations for new wines. I like Pinot Grigio and Voignier. Based on that I was given this wine, needless to say 2 years later it is still a firm favourite, the other white Rioja's on the website are nice but this remains my favourite.

Excellent Sauvignon Blanc

I am a convert to this Rioja and over the last few months have included it in my regular L’Art Du Vin order. It is fresh and citric but without too much acidity. I like Rioja wines generally as they are often full bodied and I would say that this wine has more body and bite than many SBs while still being crisp. Well worth buying.
