Adegas Valmiñor, D.O Monterrei, Spain
Adegas Valmiñor is a modern winery founded in 1998. Iñaki Vazquez and his team are devoted to the promotion of wines from the region of Rías Baixas, in Galicia.
Their ‘Minius’ Godello takes its name from the Latin for the river Miño, the natural border between southern Galicia and Portugal. It is here, in the Ourense province, that the Monterrei DO is starting to make a comeback from virtual oblivion, having lost 95% of its vineyards to phylloxera in the late 19th century. Made from the fruit of 30-year-old vines grown in the Ladairo valley, the intensity, fruit purity, elegance and length of this wine shows why local winemakers have been so determined to rescue and re-establish the Godello grape.
Iñaki and his team work tirelessly to ensure optimum quality of all their fruit, pruning the vines throughout the year to deliberately limit their production levels. This strategy means that the vines bear less fruit but that, when it comes to harvest time, the grapes that have grown have more complex flavour profiles.
'Minius' Godello 2019
Stony, mineral aromas of green apple and lemon are clean and focused. The palate follows that lead, showing mineral crispness along with bright acidity. Apple, pear and peach flavours dominate before a clean, saline finish.
