Domaine Luneau-Papin

Pierre-Marie Luneau heads this 50-hectare estate in Le Landreau, where small hamlets dot a landscape of vineyards on low hills. Their estate, also known as Domaine Pierre de la Grange, has been in existence since the early 18th century when it was already planted with Melon de Bourgogne, the Muscadet appellation’s single varietal. After taking over from his father Pierre in 2011, Pierre-Marie became the ninth generation of his family to make wine in the area.

The Luneau family has opted for producing smaller cuvées from their several plots, which are always vinified separately so a s to reflect their terroir’s particular character. The soil is mainly micaschist and gneiss, but some plots are a mix of silica, volcanic rocks and schist. The estate has a high proportion of old vines, 40 years old on average, up to 65 years of age. Through his minimal intervention approach, Pierre-Marie is able to harness the potential of his terroir and offer up a true expression of Melon de Bourgogne. It is no surprise that his wines are always packed with salinity and mineral quality, ensuring they are extremely food-friendly yet equally delicious as an aperitif.

Top Muscadet

In a line-up of seven Muscadets, this was my favourite! It’s a “bigger”, more serious wine than your usual Muscadet: more substance, riper & richer fruit aromas, more complexity. But still lean, fresh, “mineraly”, and with a creamy mouthfeel, as expected from a Muscadet. “Le Verger” from the same Domaine came in as a close second, with a richer mouthfeel, but equally as complex. Great value for money! Muscadets in general are a perfect much with oysters and other seafood. This wine, because it’s got a bit more richness, will also stand up to saucy fish dishes or cheeses that are not too strong or creamy.
