Terra Vitis registered – family owned – small yields – improving appellation

Domaine Daniel Bideau

In recent years, Daniel Bideau and Marie-Béatrice Giraud have been at the forefront of the reforms made to the Pays Nantais appellation. Their drive has led to smaller permitted yields and much improved understanding of the local terroirs. Unsurprisingly, this has ensured improved quality production from the estates who have shared this ethos – the wines of Daniel and Marie-Béatrice providing prime examples. The Domaine Bideau estate is also ‘Terra Vitis’ registered, meaning that they are committed to environmental sustainability in their winemaking. The couple produce a Muscadet that is reminiscent of quality Trebbiano from Italy, with lovely floral and almond notes, matched with well balanced acidity.

Textbook Muscadet

This wine has everything you expect from a Muscadet: fresh, citrussy-crisp acidity, minerality, balanced by stone-fruit aromas and a creamy mouthfeel. A great, versatile, everyday white, delicious with oysters and seafood. In a line-up of seven Muscadets, this was my favourite "typical" Muscadet and top for value-for-money.
